Cosmetic Dentistry FAQ
What can cosmetic dentistry improve?
Three elements of appearance matter most: white teeth, the aesthetic line (the E-line of your profile), and the smile line. Whitening brightens your teeth, and straightening your bite or alignment when needed improves the impression your whole smile makes. We start by looking at your current state and suggest the best combination.
Can a noticeable silver tooth be made white?
A silver tooth (the insurance-covered gold-silver-palladium alloy) has drawbacks in appearance and ease of cleaning, and it’s also linked to a higher risk of recurring cavities and worsening periodontal disease. Depending on the case, we consider restoring it with a white material (such as a ceramic crown). We explain suitability and cost after checking the condition of your mouth.
Can receded gums that expose the root of a tooth be treated?
In some cases, we perform a connective tissue graft, taking thicker gum tissue from the roof of the upper mouth to make up the thinned area, to improve both appearance and sensitivity. Whether you’re a candidate is decided after a detailed examination, and we explain it together with the treatment plan (case examples are available).
About how much does it cost? (an example)
It varies with your symptoms and the combination of treatments.
In our case examples, the total for a case including a connective tissue graft was 101,900 yen, and the total for a case combining whitening, partial orthodontics, and a ceramic crown for discolored teeth was 1,025,000 yen. We give you the actual cost individually after the examination.
How long does it take, and how many visits? (an example)
In our case examples, a gum graft case took about 2 months over 5 visits, while a case involving partial orthodontics took about two and a half years — it varies a great deal with the content.
We first share the goal and the steps with you at the examination and counseling session, then plan around your schedule.
Are there any risks or side effects?
Depending on the treatment, these can include post-treatment swelling, infection, relapse, or discomfort; a damaged restoration or bite discomfort; temporary sensitivity after whitening; and pain or gum recession linked to orthodontic treatment. We explain the precautions for each treatment beforehand and guide you through the necessary aftercare.
I want to brighten the color of my teeth — what methods are there?
Whitening is a way to make your teeth whiter.
The basic flow is counseling → cleaning if needed → treatment at home or in the office → shade check. We adjust the method and the number of sessions to your teeth’s condition, so please start by talking with us.
Should I also straighten my teeth and bite at the same time?
The E-line of your profile and your smile line when you smile are both strongly affected by your tooth alignment and bite. Depending on your aesthetic goal, we may plan to combine this with orthodontic treatment (such as partial orthodontics). We suggest the best order and combination based on a diagnosis.
Does this affect how I come across at work or with others?
Our site touches on how important tooth alignment and the mouth area are to a first impression, and on the difference in awareness between Japan and other countries. White teeth and a well-kept mouth are said to contribute to an impression of cleanliness, health, and refinement, and cosmetic treatment is effective at building that foundation. We work with you to sort out your goals and priorities.
